Be calm and controlled. Stick to your concern, which seems to be "I was
given a price list, the invoice wasn't in tune with that, and I'm
prepared to move my business if this isn't corrected."

Don't get upset, or bluster, or threaten. Just be matter of fact. Tell
them what you think is wrong, and what you expect them to do to fix the
problem.

This is great advice. Advice I'd have a hard time following myself, but it's
the right way to handle things.

-------- from your other email---------------
Here's the breakdown in prices:

PROCESS: FRONT BACK – CENTER
16 PAGES BASE PRICE $574.05 ADDITIONAL M's $82.32
20 PAGES BASE PRICE $656.65 ADDITIONAL M's $98.24
24 PAGES BASE PRICE $700.73 ADDITIONAL M's $107.57
28 PAGES BASE PRICE $779.75 ADDITIONAL M's $120.59
32 PAGES BASE PRICE $827.45 ADDITIONAL M's $133.68

PROCESS: 8 PAGES
16 PAGES BASE PRICE $663.41 ADDITIONAL M's $ 85.02
20 PAGES BASE PRICE $747.20 ADDITIONAL M's $100.96
24 PAGES BASE PRICE $791.80 ADDITIONAL M's $110.29
28 PAGES BASE PRICE $871.83 ADDITIONAL M's $123.31
32 PAGES BASE PRICE $920.01 ADDITIONAL M's $136.41

DELIVERY: $60.00

I'm not clear on how you get 807.00. Could you explain?
How did they come up twith the 723.00 and the 1050.00?
Which two numbers add up to 1150 or 1050?

And how many pages was this and what was the quantity?

Before we diss the printer, let's get this straight.

As I understand it the additional M's are 1,000's of the same thing.

If you add 4 pages you jump to the next line.

20 pages, six in color = $747

Delivery = $60
That equals $807.

They also inserted a bundling charge, which I've never received before.
Also, the cost they charges should have been $1,050, not $1,150.

20 pages and 2,600 copies. No additional copies, at least ordered. They

did - for reasons unknown, print an extra 1500 papers, though that is
not quoted on the bill. We took them to the recycling bin.

Correct

Correct again. Though I only printed 20 pages and the price is spelled out.

What frosts my Wheaties is the guy is claiming how much paper cost has
soared. It's strange, when all four printers I talked with today said
paper costs has been decreasing for several months. Not to mention, my
costs just went up five percent six weeks ago, supposedly to cover the
increase in the cost of ink. Not to mention another large increase about
nine months ago.

Maybe printing 2600 copies every week is simply not profitable for them.
But I know the company lost a 35,000 copy, 64+ page weekly paper about
nine months ago or so.

They will likely lose a much smaller one in the next two weeks. There's
no defense, no excuse, for someone telling me it will cost me X number
of dollars then charging X times 1.5.

FWIW

Would the next logical question be, "Are they going under?"

In December 2006 my cost for newsprint dropped from $774 CAD per tonne
to $720. It's at $720 today.

Based on what you're telling me, they've screwed up a good relationship.

I hope not. Premier does a great job and their prepress people are good.
If I screw up and forget to change the date at the top of the page,
Kelly will call me and ask if it is okay to change it (which has forced
me to make sure that part is correct!).

I will let you know what the bosses say, if they respond. And if they
don't - they will have some free press time.

The only other advice I would give is you is "don't be a dick".

them what you think is wrong, and what you expect them to do to fix the
problem.

I don't know anything about costing etc, but it sounds to me like
someone did some muddled arithmetic. Many years ago I was running a
conference on the administrative side and someone else was the
treasurer. At the end I asked for a final reckoning so we could finish
up, and he provided a page with two columns, each of about six figures,
and the totals on the bottom of both columns were the same. I had kept
my own figures (a lot more than six) as we went along and I knew there
was a mistake.

When I queried it, he asked caustically "Have you any training in
accountancy? Do you know anything about bookkeeping?" I replied with
all humility that I didn't, and that the only thing I knew about
bookkeeping was that any column should add up the the figure at the
bottom. In this case only the first column added up. The second had just
had the total typed in at the bottom and the column didn't add up to it.

His attitude changed immediately.

My point is that his first reaction was to aggressively defend his
figures, not to check them.

You may be dealing with a single individual here (one who can't do
arithmetic), so you shouldn't necessarily blame the whole company.

I am dealing with an individual. He says he's the owner. But it's
doubtful I'll be dealing with him after this week.

Well, _that_ is the actual problem I would guess. Somebody made a
_costly_ mistake and tries making ends meet. The problem is that he
tries doing this all at once instead of spreading the cost across time
and customers.
